11 A.M.

“Not everything is about you, Annabelle!”

I glanced up from my laptop at my open doorway. Katherine stood in-between the doorframe, her long blonde hair in a tight bun, holding her ballet bag, dressed in pink tights and a black leotard, with a huge scowl on her face that screamed ‘I hate you’.

“What are you talking about?” I cringed at her.

“Because of you…because of you…because of you, I’m going to be late for ballet practice.” Katherine informed, readjusting her bag strap. “Mom’s so upset with you for yelling at her. She’s just trying to help you and all you do is be mean to her. You’re so selfish!”

Dad came down the hallway and stopped next to her. “Katherine, enough!”

Our dad was tall. Katherine craned her head all the way back, looking at him with a pout. “But, but, because of her, I’m going to be late for ballet practice. And she made Mom cry.”

“Go downstairs and put your shoes on.” Dad placed his hands on her delicate shoulders and turned her towards the staircase. Giving me one last scowl, she begrudgingly made her way from my doorway. It was just Dad and me now, and a feeling deep in my belly told me it wasn’t going to be good.

“Annabelle, you need to take it easier on your mom. All she’s trying to do is help you. Every time you show her disrespect, it breaks her heart. Do you have any idea how much we care about you? We’re just concerned about your health and we can’t help you if you keep acting like a kid every time. You need to start… thinking about the feelings of others for once in your life. Young lady, it’s time to grow up!”
